Adames plans to call former teammate Burnes about possible union with Giants originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The Giants could have had more than a star shortstop when signed Willy Adames to a seven-year contract. They may have also landed a top-notch MLB recruiter.
San Francisco hired Adames for a record franchise agreementbut Buster Posey and company may not be done this offseason. All eyes are on starting pitcher Corbin Burnes, whose name has been linked to several recent rumors involving the Giants.
Adames, who played three seasons with Burnes While with the Milwaukee Brewers, he said he hasn’t talked to Burnes about joining him in the Bay Area, but he plans to make that phone call as soon as possible.
“I haven’t talked to him, but I’ll definitely call him after today,” Adames told reporters Thursday at his Giants introductory news conference at Oracle Park in San Francisco. “Obviously, you always want a guy like him. You’re always going to have guys that will compete for you. And having a guy like that would be an incredible addition.”
“But that’s something that’s out of my hands and obviously there’s a lot of work to do for that. But I’ll call him later.”
Not bad for your first unofficial official day of work.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported Wednesday that the Blue Jays and Giants would be the most “aggressive” team in pursuing Burnes, although he said Toronto would likely be the favorite to beat San Francisco.
However, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale shared a conflicting report Thursday morning that claimed the opposite: that the Giants are, in fact, the “heavy favorites” to sign the 2021 National League Cy Young winner.
It is not uncommon for players to try to attract their former teammates to their new clubs. And with a lot of changes on the horizon for an organization led by Posey, it certainly doesn’t hurt to try.
