Democratic Senate challenger Rep. Adam Schiff will face Republican Steve Garvey in the California Senate race this November, beating out two other Democrats to make the ballot.

Schiff’s campaign ran ads ahead of Tuesday’s Golden State primary criticizing the only Republican in the race, former Major League Baseball star Garvey, for being a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump.

Schiff also characterized Garvey as “too conservative for California,” hoping the ads would serve as a bite to GOP voters and thus put a damper on his two Democratic rivals, Representatives Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.

California is such a Democratic state — especially in a presidential election year — that Garvey, as a challenger, virtually guarantees that it will be Schiff who replaces the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein and serves out the remainder of her current term.

The state has a “jungle”-style primary in which the top two voters, regardless of party, advance to the November vote.

On Tuesday night, 30 minutes after polls closed, Schiff officially advanced to the general election, and at 9:01 the Associated Press said Garvey would be the opponent of the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

The results were bad news for Porter, a nationally known progressive, as well as Lee, a longtime California lawmaker.

Porter received about 15 percent of the vote and Lee only got about 7 percent.

The quick announcement of the race went largely unnoticed at Porter’s viewing party in Long Beach, where a DJ blasted Katy Perry’s Fireworks, a favorite at Democratic Party events and, curiously, at the YMCA, a familiar item from former President Donald Trump’s rally playlist.

Progressives criticized the result.

“Adam Schiff put his own selfishness above democracy by praising Republican Steve Garvey, who will now vote for Trump in key House elections that could determine control of Congress,” said Adam Green, co-founder of the Campaign Committee. of Progressive Change. whose group had backed Porter.

In the end, Schiff’s ads apparently had an impact.

‘Announcements “Those who have run against Steve Garvey, in my case, I looked at them and I’m laughing a little bit, thinking that those are the exact reasons why I want to vote for him,” said Michael Mesbah, 32. DailyMail.com at its polling place in downtown Huntington Beach on Monday.

Mesbah, who works in advertising, went to the polls on Monday with his wife Allyssa, 29, a dancer, where they both voted for Trump and Garvey.

He wasn’t surprised when he was told that Schiff was paying for those ads.

“That would make sense because they are flattering ads if you look at them from that point of view,” Mesbah said.
