Piper Laurie dies at 91: Oscar-nominated actress praised for her role in Carrie and Twin Peaks
Iconic actress Piper Laurie has passed away at the age of 91.
Laurie, best known for her role in Carrie as the title character’s demented mother, died Saturday at her home in Los Angeles. She had been ill for some time.
Manager Marion Rosenberg called the star ‘a wonderful person and one of the great talents of our time’.
The actress earned her first Oscar nomination for her work in the 1961 film The Hustler, in which she starred opposite Paul Newman.
Her character saw her play an alcoholic who memorably told Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got problems and I think you might have problems.” Maybe it’s better if we just leave each other alone.’

She retired for more than a decade to raise a family, but returned to film and television roles in the mid-1970s.
She achieved a slew of impressive roles with Oscar nominations for Carrie and “Children of a Lesser God,” in which she played Marlee Matlin’s strict mother.
Laurie appeared in more than 100 films and TV shows during her career.
Many of her roles received critical acclaim, including her performance as a power-hungry, conniving Catherine Martell in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
She won two of her nine Emmy nominations on that show alone.
