Five eco-activists were arrested yesterday after protesters sprayed fake oil on the Bank of England front.

Members of the Extinction Rebellion campaign group – known as XR – carried out the “ elaborate April Fool’s joke ” to object to the role they believe banks are playing in the climate crisis.

Protesters coated the outside of the sofa with a substance made from a mixture of black pond paint and guar gum – a thickener.

Officers said one person had been arrested for criminal offense.

Three others face a count of criminal damages and were re-arrested for being equipped to commit criminal damages. All five remain in police custody.

XR said its actions were aimed at those who are “ recklessly jeopardizing our future for profit. ”

In 2019, eight people were arrested after XR activists tried to spray fake blood in the Treasury Building in Westminster.

That year, the group also caused widespread disruption by blocking out parts of the capital for days on end.
