Police responded to an active shooter situation in Melbourne, Florida, on Wednesday, when a man barricaded himself in an apartment.
The public was asked to avoid the Babcock Street and Strawbridge Avenue area for much of the morning.
A spokesperson for the police department told DailyMail.com that they were met with fire when they arrived at the location of the apartments in Pentagon Gardens after receiving a call about suspicious activity.
According to officials, no officers were injured.
“The incident has been contained at this time, however the investigation remains ongoing,” Melbourne Police said on social media.
The public is asked to avoid the area of Babcock Street and Strawbridge Avenue.
“Although there will continue to be a police presence in the area, there are no further threats to public safety.
Images from the scene showed SWAT vehicles and dozens of officers blocking the street.
Journalists at the scene say they heard several bursts of fire.
The Melbourne Police Department previously said: ‘The Melbourne Police Department is actively working an active shooter situation in the Babcock and Strawbridge area.
‘Please avoid the area. The press staging area is located in the parking lot north of Hibicus, west of Babcock. We will keep you informed as we receive more information.’

“We still have officers in distress,” Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie said about two hours after the incident began.
‘We still have a guy in there. We still have officers in danger. I want to make sure they get out of there safely and take this guy into custody.’
Melbourne is a coastal city about 70 miles southeast of Orlando.
