Australia’s consumer safety watchdog has issued an urgent recall of a popular bicycle, warning that a manufacturing defect creates a serious safety risk for cyclists.
The steering clamp on some Brompton T Line bikes can loosen, the regulator warned, causing the handlebar mount and fork to become misaligned, leading to a loss of steering control.
“There is a risk of accident and serious injury if the cyclist loses steering control while the bicycle is in use,” the ACCC said on Friday.
“Consumers should stop using bicycles immediately.”
Affected consumers will be able to have the repair done free of charge at a Brompton dealer, the watchdog added.
‘Consumers who have a bicycle torque wrench and are comfortable performing the repair themselves should follow the instructions on the recall website to tighten the head tube clamp hinge bolts.
‘Consumers who do not feel comfortable carrying out the repair themselves or are unable to visit a Brompton dealer can contact Brompton for assistance in arranging a repair.’
The affected bicycles were manufactured before June 21, 2024 and have a serial number ranging from 2104190001 to 2406070001.
The bikes were sold domestically and internationally between February 1, 2022, and July 24, 2024.
