Maybe they should start calling it The veteran.
ABC has revamped its cop drama The rookie, starring Nathan Fillion, for a sixth season in 2023-24. Early next season, the series will cross the 100-episode milestone. The pickup comes two weeks before the season five finale on May 2.
The rookie is the third veteran series ABC has renewed for 2023-24 Abbot Elementary School And Gray’s Anatomy.
The rookie has long been a decent ratings contender for ABC, but saw the numbers soar with a move to Tuesday nights in January (where it leads to its spin-off, The rookie: Feds). The show’s same-day viewership has grown 31 percent compared to its fall average, when it aired on Sundays. Tuesday’s episodes have improved Tuesday night’s 8 p.m. ratings by 40 percent in total viewers and 17 percent in adults aged 18-49 over the same period last year. Multiplatform ratings are also up from last season.
Along with Fillion, The rookie with Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan and Tru Valentino. Entertainment One produces the series with ABC Signature. Series creator Alexi Hawley serves as an executive producer with Fillion, Mark Gordon, Michelle Chapman, and Jon Steinberg.
