ABC News Breakfast presenter James Glenday has come under fire for his on-air attire.

The criticism came after the veteran journalist broke with convention and appeared without a tie on Tuesday’s edition of the morning show.

Glenday, who has worked at the national broadcaster for 15 years, took up the high-profile role this month after presenter Michael Rowland resigned from the role last year.

Glenday without a tie seems strange and quite forced. “It would look more natural with one on,” complained one armchair critic on a television industry blog. media spy.

The same user also took a shot at Nate Byrne, who appeared in the same episode wearing a colorful open-necked shirt.

“Nate also needs to stop dressing like a kindergarten teacher,” the blogger complained.

However, several viewers came forward to defend the ABC Breakfast news team’s clothing style.

“Glenday looks good without a tie, and Nate has always dressed in his own unique way, none of that inhibits the way they do their jobs,” said one blogger in the same thread.

“They both look great to me,” another agreed.

Another user pointed out that it is usually television presenters who provoke criticism from viewers.

‘On the one hand, it’s refreshing to see how men are scrutinized for what they wear, for a change.

“On the other hand, they both seem to do their jobs perfectly well in their current attire.”

It comes after Glenday was announced as the replacement for ABC News Breakfast presenter Michael Rowland last month.

Glenday took on the role after frequently appearing as a fill-in host on the show.

He was previously a presenter for ABC’s 7pm news in Canberra.

He now co-hosts the breakfast show alongside Bridget Brennan, who he revealed he met on his first day at the ABC when he joined as a cadet in 2010.

The veteran reporter has extensive political and field experience, having worked as an ABC correspondent in Europe and the United States during his time at the network.

The broadcaster also confirmed that sports presenter Catherine Murphy will replace Tony Armstrong on ABC News Breakfast.

“The opportunity to join News Breakfast and replace Michael Rowland, a beloved colossus of Australian broadcasting, is an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Glenday says.

‘It will be lovely to host the show with Bridget, an old friend and fellow millennial. We’re quite different people, but for some inexplicable reason she tolerates my terrible jokes, so we get along well.

‘ABC News Breakfast is the natural place for Australia’s biggest names to come share their news and stories. “I can’t wait to start working with this talented team.”

Michael, 55, broke the shocking news of his departure to viewers in December.

“I’m leaving News Breakfast,” Rowland announced.

‘I’m sorry to the viewers for the short notice. I’m not one for long, drawn-out goodbyes and I wanted minimal fuss.

‘I love the job, it’s the best job I’ve had at ABC. In fact, anywhere. But after 15 years of starting at 3 a.m., my body is screaming “enough!” And so does my wife.

‘It has been an immense privilege to be here for 15 years presenting the news to our viewers. For me, that has been by far the most important part of the job.

The veteran journalist presented the centenary of the Gallipoli landings and coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Rowland has also served as Lateline’s economics correspondent and state political reporter in both New South Wales and Victoria.

Justin Stevens, ABC news director, said in a statement: “Michael has been instrumental to the success of News Breakfast for the past 15 years, a familiar and trusted face for viewers every morning.

‘His ability to cover serious reporting and lighter topics, and do it live on television for three hours each morning, demonstrates what an enormous talent he is as a broadcaster.

“He will be sorely missed on the News Brekky couch, but we can’t wait to see what he does next for ABC after a well-deserved break.”

Meanwhile, Bridget, co-host of Rowland’s ABC News Breakfast show, said it has been “an honor and a privilege” to be alongside him.

“I have seen firsthand his enduring dedication to journalism and public service,” Brennan said in a statement.

‘After 15 years, we Australians will greatly miss his presence each and every morning, but I know we all appreciate the incredible effort he has put into News Breakfast for so long.

‘Michael, I hope the next chapter brings you long nights of sleep and more time to stay up late and take care of your beloved Doggies.’
