A year 11 student commits suicide near Wollongong Central shopping mall in broad daylight

A teenager tragically committed suicide in broad daylight outside a busy shopping center in a major provincial city.

Emergency services were called to Keira Street, near the Wollongong Central shopping center in the city’s central business district, around 11.15am on Monday to report that a teenage boy had been seriously injured.

The boy was taken to Wollongong Hospital but was not revived.

The road was closed to traffic and pedestrians for two hours as detectives investigated the scene.

Parts of the food court were temporarily closed but the mall remained open as normal.

The teenager was an eleventh grader at the selective Wollongong’s Smith’s Hill High School.

The school’s students have been offered access to counseling services in the aftermath of the tragedy.
