The woman shared her story in a Mumsnet post that sparked debate as to whether it was best to tell the man’s wife
“Now I feel so guilty for ruining this poor woman’s life and I wish I had never said anything,” she wrote. ‘It was a stupid impulse after I had a few drinks and wish I could take them back.
‘I see she read it, but she hasn’t responded. I keep thinking about what I did and feel warm with shame. Why was I so stupid and destructive? ‘
The post turned out to be divisive, with some users hitting the woman’s “ horrible ” behavior.
One of them wrote: ‘Do you really think his wife will leave him because of some random messages from a stranger ??!

“She will probably be anxious, stressed and very unhappy now if she hadn’t been there before! You didn’t even meet him in person, so why bother ?! I always look at the motive of the act and your motive was quite vengeful! ‘
Another wrote: ‘I can’t believe how many people say this was the right thing to do! I don’t believe it is right to get involved in other people’s lives in this way and you have never met that man ?! ‘
A third added: ‘I’m not trying to make you feel bad OP, but personally this is something I could never do as the consequences for wife and children can be huge, I just couldn’t live with myself. ‘
However, others urged the woman not to punish herself, arguing that the man had already ruined the marriage by choosing to have an affair
However, others urged the woman not to punish herself, arguing that the husband had already ruined the marriage by choosing to have an affair.
One wrote, “The woman won’t thank you, but I think you definitely did the right thing. She probably suspected it. There’s nothing worse than being the last to know. ‘
A second posted: ‘I think you did the right thing. I don’t know why people say you shouldn’t get involved, he literally got you involved by having an emotional affair.
‘I would much rather know if I was cheated on, it saves shame and shame further down the road. It is very likely that he has done it before and will do it again. ‘
Several people told the woman that it had been the right choice and that the woman would probably be grateful in the long run
