The post was titled: “Am I an idiot for cancelling my friend’s baby shower?”

He started the thread by revealing that he would be using ‘fake names.’

‘My friend Ally (F22) is having her first child, a girl, in November. She’s not very close with her family and as far as I know, she hasn’t told any of them that she’s pregnant yet.

‘For context, I met Ally just over a year ago when our partners became friends. Three months ago, Ally, myself (F22) and our other friend Fiona (F23) started planning a baby shower for her. There was also talk that Fiona and I would cover the costs of everything.

‘Since none of us had ever been to one, and this would be our first, everything was planned in advance, from the decorations, the food, the activities, etc. We already had the invitations made, the only thing we hadn’t decided on was the venue, because she said she would do that.’

The friend explained that while they were organizing the baby shower, Ally moved into her parents’ house and added that she had received the go-ahead to hold her baby shower at their residence.

She added: ‘Around the same time we started planning the baby shower, Ally and her partner moved into her parents’ house.

“She said she had gotten permission and it would be okay to have the baby shower there, so as far as we were concerned, the baby shower would be held there!”

And although everything seemed to be going well, everything came to an abrupt halt two months later when the mother-to-be began ignoring the party organizers.

The post continued: ‘Two months later (a month ago), we have been trying to get in touch with Ally and have been messaging her every day for almost two weeks straight to try and start to figure everything out.

‘There were things she wanted to do as far as cleaning to prepare for the baby shower and we were happy to help her do that, we also needed to drop off the invitations she had made so she could send them out to her friends. I needed to know what times would work for her. Since she didn’t respond, Fiona and I assumed she didn’t want to do the baby shower anymore.

And even though the two best friends thought the party was cancelled, their assumption seemed to haunt them when Ally finally responded.

‘Three days ago, she finally texted me and said, “Hey, sorry I haven’t been in touch with you, I’ve been sick. When will you be free again for the baby shower stuff?”

“Another friend who saw her a week ago said she seemed fine. And on top of that, she has a history of saying she’s ‘sick’ when she just doesn’t want any visitors. She also posted with her other friends on her story while she was supposedly ‘sick’. Right now, we’re a week into the brainstorm being supposed to happen and I’m just not feeling it anymore,” the original post’s author said.

‘I should also add that I live in another city about an hour away and have three kids under the age of five so I don’t really have any time to waste. I feel like from my standpoint I’ve done everything I can to prepare for the baby shower such as ordering balloons, invitations, gifts for both her and the baby as well as some more baby shower decorations and I’ve been waiting for her response.’

The friend said she had tried to understand Ally’s situation, adding that she knew how difficult it could be to expect a child and the cost it entailed.

However, she explained that she no longer wanted to be a part of her friend’s special day. At the end of the post, she wondered if she would be an “idiot” if she cancelled the party.

She said: ‘I’ve tried to show her grace because I know how difficult pregnancy can be and I understand if she needed space, but I honestly feel like I’m being made fun of.

“Would I be a jerk if I canceled the baby shower? A friend of mine said I was a jerk for canceling her invitation, but I feel like she’s not making any effort for the baby shower or our friendship.”

One person said: “No, no, you moron. If I knew there was a baby shower coming up for me, I would do anything to help the person hosting it. Not responding for two weeks is a moron. Pregnant or not! Cancel that shit. Give back everything you ordered!”

Someone else wrote: “No, not that asshole. She ignored you both. It seems she realized her new best friends weren’t going to offer to host a baby shower and thought she’d better get back with you. Some people just want friends they can benefit from.”

“I’m not the jerk, but if you’ve already bought everything, I would go ahead and have the party, but then probably minimize your contact with her,” another person commented.

However, one user claimed she was wrong.

They wrote: ‘I’m not sure how much effort she’s supposed to put in since you and Fiona are hosting the party. Why don’t you and Fiona, as hosts, send out the invitations? It was rude of her not to reply to your messages anyway. Her punishment is that some of her friends probably won’t be able to make it at this late hour and she’ll have to do her own cleaning.’

“You’d be an idiot to cancel the party right now. If that had been in the cards, you should have said, ‘If we don’t hear from you by whatever date, we’ll assume you’re no longer interested in this.'”
