A woman has sparked a heated online debate after refusing to allow the previous owners to enter and view her former home.

A Reddit user, known as ‘No-Ask3051’, asked other users online: ‘Am I an idiot for not letting the former owners of the house look inside the house and yard?’

The Redditor, who posted on the popular AITA SubredditHe explained that his parents bought the property in 1993 from a landlord who lived there with his three daughters.

One day, the user’s neighbor “suddenly appeared in her yard” with her three daughters and told her that the sisters “wanted to see how everything was now.”

The Redditor assumed the family was simply going to take a look from outside, however, they wanted to be let into their home.

The Redditor explained that her neighbor “is a kind lady (who is always) helping” and added: “We do not have, nor do we want to have, any problem with her.”

After requesting to be allowed to look inside, the Redditor explained: ‘I stood there confused but said ‘Okay,’ (and) then (there was) complete silence for two minutes.

‘I thought they were just going to watch from the outside and that was it.

Then my neighbor said, “Can you come inside the house and see how it is now?”

I said, “Everything’s changed, but no, I’m sorry. I’m not comfortable with that. I don’t know you.”

When the user refused to give them the grand tour, the “neighbor became angry” and the sisters “were also visibly upset.”

The furious neighbour called the user “very bad” and, frustrated, asked: “Why didn’t you let them take a look inside the house? What could happen?”

The Redditor shared: ‘I was pretty shocked, but I politely told him, “I’m not comfortable with this.”

The user explained that if she were in the same situation, she would simply check her old house “from the street and continue where she was going in the first place.”

The new owner desperately asked the patrons, “Am I the idiot for not letting them see inside and give them a tour of the yard, etc.?”

The Reddit user edited the post, adding: “Mom just got home from work. After I told her what happened, she told me this happened 10 years ago.”

She was confused too, but she let them in because she didn’t want to fight with our neighbor. So they saw the house.

The user provided more context in the comments, adding that after learning the brothers had seen the house before, she thought, “What the hell? It looks even creepier now…”

In another comment, she wrote: ‘They live 932 miles from here. They come to my country once every three years, for some paperwork they have to sort out.’

‘They have another house here. If they are so good to my neighbor, they should know that this one is not for sale and will not be for long…’

In another comment, the user explained: ‘We did a MAJOR interior renovation in 2007 – we tore down almost everything after the big earthquake and people tested the stability of the house and the floor, because we had the feeling that the house was “sinking” in the middle.

“They drilled a hole in the upper foundation of the house and discovered that there was actually NO foundation, just the “frame” that holds the house up. So maybe the former owners really did hide something in there lol.”

One person wrote: ‘Maybe the three daughters were feeling homesick, but if you say ‘no’, it’s ‘no’. It hasn’t been their home for 30 years.

‘NOT. Tell your neighbor that she cannot decide how to respond to a request.’

A second person commented: ‘NB. I’ve heard too many stories of “people who used to live there” (and) people who want to visit their old houses, and are just checking out the place to see if there’s anything worth stealing.

“It’s not worth it and it’s not their home anymore. And on top of that, this was in ’93 when they sold the house, so it’s been more than 30 years. They don’t remember that damn place.”

A third person added: ‘NTA. Sure, it would have been nice of you to do so (especially since I assume that neighbor knew them when they lived there, so it wasn’t just someone pretending to have lived there), but you are not obligated in any way.

‘It’s your house, and you may have any number of reasons for not wanting strangers in your home, and that’s nobody’s business.’

One person wrote: “A little weird, sorry. You don’t know them, but your neighbour does, and they didn’t come without her. Your nice neighbour wouldn’t bring someone to you like that. They were probably homesick.”

‘Maybe they saw the house when they were 12 and now they’re 22, you don’t know.

‘Dishes and laundry don’t matter. I don’t understand the other comments – if I could make someone’s day better by doing nothing (it would probably take me five minutes at most), I would do it, let alone three (of that person’s days).

“It wasn’t a big deal to make someone happy, and I know I would be too if my parents sold the family home. People on Reddit don’t do anything for others unless they get something in return.”

A second person commented: ‘In the last two years, we went out to look at a house three times. The owner came out and asked us what we were doing.

“We told them and all three of them invited us on a guided tour. One of them lasted over an hour. YTA, a special guy because they owned the house. Obviously, they raised you well.”

A third person added: “It’s funny how you can’t have a minority opinion on Reddit. It’s kind of sad.”

“I would say YTA because it’s not that big of a deal. If your house is dirty, just tell them to come back another time. It’s a small gesture that can brighten someone’s day.”
