Two women got into a heated argument in a Kmart parking lot after a Staffy owner returned to her car to find a stranger (pictured) and his daughter petting her dog.

Australians are divided over who is in the wrong after a dog owner had a heated exchange with a woman who allegedly tried to pet her Staffy.

Rea Luketic left her dog in her car for a few minutes while she picked up a package at a Kmart in Belmont, in Geelong, southern Victoria.

When Luketic returned to his car, he claimed to have found the woman and her teenage daughter reaching into his car to “pet and greet” their dog.

She asked the couple to step away from the car and explained why she believed the behavior was “unacceptable,” prompting the woman to threaten to take the dog.

“I’ll take your damn dog next time you try your shit on me, bitch,” the woman responded in footage of the altercation shared on social media.

“Try it, try it…see what the fuck happens,” Ms. Luketic replied.

The woman then ordered Ms Luketic to “get in her damn car” and asked her if she intended to take the images to the “police officer”.

“No… I’ll fix it myself,” the pet owner responded.

Luketic asked the woman if her behavior was a good example for her daughter, who appeared to be sitting in a car parked nearby.

“She really knows more than you, so fuck you,” the woman said.

“It seems that learning doesn’t run in the family,” Ms. Luketic responded.

Australians were divided over who was wrong.

‘They had no right to approach her car or her property, this lady’s behavior is atrocious. I’m sorry for what happened to you, you handled it well,” wrote one viewer.

‘The dog had fresh air with the windows down a little and you just walked quickly into the shop, so I don’t see a problem, some people need to mind their business, it would be a different story if all the windows were closed and the dog was cooking in the car and you take too long to go shopping, then I would be angry too,” said a second.

“Congratulations on staying calm and standing your ground,” wrote a third.

But others said the woman who petted the dog had done nothing wrong.

‘You don’t deserve dogs, friend! “Barking up the wrong tree and posting it on your page, I’d take your dog too,” one said.

“Maybe he took the wrong turn, but he’s not wrong…don’t leave your dog in the car,” wrote a second.

‘Why did you leave your dog in the car during the summer?’ a third agreed.

“He was probably trying to do the right thing and make sure the dog was okay while you were shopping,” said a fourth. .

Luketic said he only left his Staffy in his car for about four minutes and the windows were down.

“This issue had less to do with the heat, more to do with not putting your hands in my car to touch the dog,” Ms Luketic said.

Leaving an animal in a vehicle for more than 10 minutes when the temperature is 28°C or higher is illegal in Victoria.

Pet owners are warned that their pets can be seriously injured or killed if kept in a hot vehicle, even if the windows are down or the car is parked in the shade.

If a dog appears to be in danger, witnesses are urged to contact Victoria Police.
