Newcastle fans caused a sensation in Milan ahead of their Champions League showdown on Tuesday, with a video capturing the moment one jumped onto the city canal and took on a local rowing team in a bizarre race.
The overconfident fan left the rowers stunned as he dove into the Naviglio Grande and attempted to swim alongside them.
Delighted fans cheered him on as he took off his boxers to cool off in the canal, which was filled with Newcastle and England flags as fans prepared for the game.
Despite his bravado and the crowd’s enthusiastic applause, the daring swimmer only managed a few strokes before being overtaken by the boat.
As the rowboat disappears into the distance, clearly winning the competition, boos erupt as the man slows to a dejected oar.
The fan perplexed the rowers as he dove into the Naviglio Grande and attempted to swim alongside them.

It’s gone, it’s gone: the unsuspecting fan jumps into the Naviglio Grande as a rowboat passes by

The men in the quad sculls looked perplexed as the man desperately tried to compete with them, before he quickly ran out of strength.
‘I could have made it!’ an onlooker yelled sarcastically. Another joked that the man might need a life preserver since he lost his stamina.
He later attempted to climb out of the canal, with no ladder or helping hand in sight.
The fan’s strange stunt occurred just hours before his team played AC Milan at the San Siro.
Jubilant fans filled the streets as the Magpies returned to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

The channel was packed with Newcastle and England fans as delighted supporters cheered on their man. Unfortunately, he quickly lost his stamina and the Milanese rowers moved ahead.
Hundreds of raucous fans packed into Lombardy’s capital, many of them going wild as they drunkenly took to the city streets.
More fans opted to go topless as they enjoyed pre-match drinks in the city centre, with one video showing a handful sliding on their chests through the rain-soaked streets.
Their antics were branded “shameful” by some locals, and video showed angry residents shoving dozens of men as they rode a slip and slide on the cobbled streets.
The group cleared a smooth part of the road and took out plastic cups before launching themselves like a human bowling ball.
A man took out some people as he flew into the crowd, leaving the Toon Army members in hysterics.
But after an entertaining build-up to the match, spirits were sadly dampened by the result, with a 0-0 draw. On tuesday night.
