Fatal traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt, which has a poor record for transportation safety.
At least 17 people were killed, officials and local media announced that a passenger bus collided with a slow-moving truck on a highway in southwestern Egypt.
The accident occurred late Wednesday evening in the New Valley Governorate, according to its governor, Muhammad al-Zamlot.
The governor pointed out that 17 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to transport the victims to nearby hospitals and morgues.
For its part, the Egyptian Ministry of Health confirmed the death of 17 people and the injury of 29 others in the accident.
The local Al-Shorouk newspaper quoted an unnamed official as saying that the bus hit the truck, which was “about to stop” on the road. It stated that the bus was carrying 45 passengers heading to the capital, Cairo.
