It was seen as his chance to finally set the record to one of the darkest episodes in modern royal history.
But for the millions at home that Prince Andrew writhed while being questioned about every detail of his private life, it asked more questions than it answered.
The Duke of York refuted allegations that he had three sexual encounters with a teenage girl presented to him by pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
While he insisted that he & # 39; no reminder & # 39; had met Virginia Roberts once, the prince gave a number of sometimes unusual explanations about how the couple could not have been together in the circumstances she proposed.
With a newly discovered email in which Andrew is said to have been placed on the private island of Epstein, while Miss Roberts suggests that the couple was involved in an "orgy," the Daily Mail is analyzing the claims here …
The Duke of York insisted that he & # 39; no memory & # 39; had met Virginia Roberts once, and gave a series of sometimes unusual explanations about how the couple could not have been together in the circumstances they proposed, including a claim that he is suffering from a rare medical condition, meaning he cannot sweat. THE LONDON MEETING
Virginia Roberts – now a 36-year-old mother known as Virginia Giuffre – claims that she was forced by Epstein to have sex with Prince Andrew three times.
The first opportunity was reportedly in March 2001, when the 17-year-old with the alleged "madame" Ghislaine Maxwell was flown to Epstein on the private jet of Epstein.
The prince claims that he was introduced to Epstein via Maxwell in 1999, after meeting her while she was studying in Oxford.
Miss Roberts claims that the group ate at their first meeting and then went to dance at the Tramp nightclub in Mayfair.
In lawsuits filed earlier in the US, Miss Roberts said the group was returning to Maxwell's mews house in Belgravia, central London, where the couple took a bath together before having a sexual encounter.
Her claims were withdrawn from the record by an American judge in 2015, whom she described as "impudent and intangible."
Andrew and Buckingham Palace have repeatedly denied the claims.
It was during this meeting – probably March 10, 2001 – that the prince would have posed for the now notorious photo with his arm around the waist of Miss Roberts.
The Duke of York refuted allegations that he had three sexual encounters with Virginia Roberts, introduced to him by pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein
In response to the allegations about BBN & # 39; s Newsnight, Prince Andrew said, "I can't remember ever meeting this lady, at all."
Regarding Miss Roberts' claims that he bought her a drink, the prince said: & I don't know where the bar in Tramp is. I don't drink, I don't think I ever bought a drink at Tramp & # 39; s when I was there. & # 39;
The prince is a bona fide teetotaler and has been a big part of his adult life. He said he didn't know where the bar was. However, photos taken several times between 1983 and 1990 place him in the Tramp nightclub. Flight data from the private jet of Epstein – the & # 39; Lolita Express & # 39; called – places on the relevant day Miss Roberts in London after a whistle-stop tour from Palm Beach, Florida to Canada, Paris, Grenada in Spain and Tangier in Morocco, before touching down in Luton on March 9, 2001.
She left Luton Airport two days later to return to the US and allegedly developed the photo of her and Andrew together on March 13.
NEW YORK INCIDENT
Miss Roberts claims that she and the prince had sex for the second time in the palace-like mansion of Epstein in Epstein.
Andrew said that so many people came and went that it looked more like a "train station".
The duke is said to have used a present – a latex doll of his own from the TV series Spitting Image – in a joke to touch the breasts of Miss Roberts and another woman, Johanna Sjoberg. Miss Sjoberg spoke about the alleged incident four years before Miss Roberts was first made public in 2011 with her allegations. In an interview with The Mail on Sunday in 2007, she said: "We have taken a photo. Virginia, another girl there, sat on a chair and had the doll on her lap. Andrew sat in another chair, I sat on his lap – and he put his hand on my chest.
Emily Maitlis (left) laid down the claims on the prince and said: & # 39; In a 2015 legal statement, she said she had sex with you three times. & # 39; The prince said the incidents had not occurred, but stopped accusing Miss Roberts of lying
& # 39; Ghislaine put the hand of the doll on the chest of Virginia, and then Andrew put his hand on mine. It was a great joke. Everyone laughed. & # 39;
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said: "This relates to proceedings in the United States where the Duke of York is not a party. Every suggestion of impropriety with minors is categorically not true. & # 39;
The duke said the alleged sexual encounter could not have happened because Miss Roberts had already left New York for the private island of Epstein before the prince returned to town.
& # 39; I think the date we have before shows that I was in Boston or the previous day in New York and that I was dining for The Outward Bound Trust in New York and then I flew the next one day to Boston and then the day she said this happened, they had already left for the island before I returned from Boston, & he said. The Court Circular shows that the prince left London Heathrow for New York on April 9. Flight logs from the private jet from Epstein suggest that Miss Roberts arrived from Florida to New York the same day.
The following evening, the prince indeed flew to Boston to meet with the Outward Bound Trust – a UK-based educational charity of which he is a patron – and returned to New York on the afternoon of April 11.
Flight logs show that Miss Roberts, Epstein, Maxwell and a & # 39; Joann & # 39; – presumably referring to Johanna Sjoberg – left New York for St. Thomas in the Caribbean on 11 April. Andrew suggests that the timing of the alleged sexual encounter means it has not happened at all. He added that a sexual encounter could not have taken place because he was staying with the consul general – a building on the same street as Epstein's house.
Andrew & # 39; s third alleged sexual relationship with Miss Roberts is said to have taken place around the 18th birthday on the private Caribbean island of Epstein – Little Saint James.
Emily Maitlis submitted the claims to the prince and said: "In a 2015 legal statement, she said she had sex with you three times.
"Once in a London house when she was traded to you at Maxwell's house. Once in New York a month or so later at Epstein's house and once on his private island in a group of seven or eight other girls. & # 39;
Andrew said the incidents had not occurred, but stopped accusing Miss Roberts of lying. "I can't know what she's trying to achieve, but I can tell you categorically that I don't remember that I met her," he said.
"I can't remember that a picture was taken and I have consistently and often said that we have never had sexual contact."
Andrew said the incidents had not occurred, but stopped accusing Miss Roberts of lying. "I can't know what she's trying to accomplish, but I can tell you categorically that I don't remember that I met her," he said
In a 2015 legal statement, Miss Roberts said that she and Andrew had sex during an "orgy" on the private island with other girls – who she said were under the age of 18 – who didn't speak English. These allegations were removed from the US record. Flight logs show that Miss Roberts arrived in the US Virgin Islands on April 11 and then made a boat transfer to the neighboring private island of Epstein.
A group including Miss Roberts, Epstein, Maxwell and a financial manager who became a politician and was named Gwendolyn Beck, then left five days later for Epstein's mansion in Florida.
The Court Circular does not indicate where the prince was in this period, but by April 15 — Easter Sunday — he was reportedly in the Bahamas. He had been absent from the Queen's Easter service at Windsor Castle, and a courtier told The Daily Telegraph that he was on vacation at the exclusive destination – about a two-hour flight from the island of Epstein.
New claims dug up by the Mail seem to place Andrew on the island around the time Miss Roberts claims their meeting took place.
Miss Beck, a Donald Trump fan who received thousands of pounds from Epstein when she walked to the congress unsuccessfully in 2014, said she had been to Little Saint James in the days prior to April 16, 2001.
In a previously unseen email to a freelance journalist, sent in 2015, she claimed that the prince arrived "very late at night," stayed the next day and left early the next morning.
"He was in the bungalow next to me," she claimed. "I didn't hear any strange noises or anything unusual. He flirted with me, but like I said before, I was in love with someone else. & # 39;
WHY REMAIN THEIR FRIENDSHIP?
The prince and Epstein continued to socialize until 2006. In May of that year, an arrest warrant was issued for the financier for sexual abuse of a minor. Nevertheless, Epstein was invited to Windsor Castle for the 18th birthday party of Princess Beatrice.
The prince defended the invitation and said: "I asked Ghislaine. But still, at that time I don't think I … I certainly didn't know when the invitation was issued what was going on in the United States. & # 39;
Epstein was arrested eight days after attending the parties.
Prince Andrew told the BBC that he & # 39; had broken off & # 39; with Epstein & # 39; after I knew he was researching and that was later in 2006 & # 39 ;.
In September of that year Andrew flew on the private jet of Epstein. Epstein was not on the Luton flight to Edinburgh, allegedly for a private wedding, but Maxwell was.
He said he no longer spoke to him until 2010, when they were pictured as they walked together in Central Park in New York shortly after the release of the pedophile from prison.

The prince spent a few days at the Epstein house in New York, despite the fact that he told Maitlis that he had only visited him to break their friendship.
It was "a convenient place to stay," he said. "With the benefit of all afterwards that one can have, it was absolutely wrong to do."
It was brought to the royal party that Epstein had held a celebration to celebrate his release from prison during that journey, with the duke invited as "guest of honor." Andrew confirmed that he was attending a "small dinner party."
His reason to visit the convicted pedophile to end their friendship?
"My judgment was probably colored by my tendency to be honorable, but so it is," he said.
In response to claims about the prince's timeline, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, "His Royal Highness was very clear because he has been consistent that he had no form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts."
