A social sea lion has made an unlikely friendship with a dog after the playful couple were captured together in the ocean just meters from the shore.

Ryan Waldock had walked his four-year-old dog Asta on Fremantle & South Beach when he noticed that the puppy was overly enthusiastic about something in the water.

Although they were two completely different species, naval skipper Ryan said the unlikely pair saw the best friends while they chased in the water.
