The Australian coach of the women’s triathlon silver medallist has been revealed as the second known child sex offender to take part in the Olympics.

Brett Sutton, 65, coached Switzerland’s Julie Derron to second place last week, ahead of Team GB’s Beth Potter.

He received accreditation from China and was present at the event, where he gave an interview to Swiss television near the finish line on the Pont Alexandre III.

In later images, Sutton’s official Olympic accreditation lanyard can be seen around her neck.

In 1999, Sutton pleaded guilty to five counts of sexually abusing a 13-year-old Australian girl, a swimmer he had coached. He was sentenced to two years in prison, with a three-year suspended sentence.

According to The Sunday Times, Judge Robert Hall said Sutton had interfered with the girl in a “gross and disgraceful” manner and “abused her role to an inexcusable degree”.

However, he noted that as national triathlon coach he was preparing several athletes for the Sydney Games and that they would “suffer disadvantages from his absence on the scene”.

Several foundations have banned Sutton from coaching.

On Friday, Dutch paedophile Steven van de Velde advanced to the round of 16 of the beach volleyball doubles tournament. Van de Velde was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for raping a 12-year-old British girl.

The 29-year-old was again booed in defeat to Norway alongside teammate Matthew Immers at the Eiffel Tower Stadium, but despite the loss, the pair managed to progress to the next stage.
