Morrisons is spreading Christmas cheer by giving away a traditional festive food to thousands of shoppers this weekend.
The British supermarket has teamed up with the star of its Christmas advert, Farmer Christmas, to hand out thousands of carrots to customers and their little ones in time for the big day.
Farmer Christmas has personally delivered 175,000 twisted carrots (equivalent to 29 tonnes) on his festive tractor for children to pick up free of charge, ready to drop off on Christmas Eve along with a mince pie and a glass of milk.
Shoppers will be able to pick up their free carrot between December 22 and 23, while supplies last.
British wonky carrots – oversized or misshapen products with the same delicious taste – will be available in all 498 stores across the UK for customers to collect from a Morrisons Community Champion.
The giveaway hopes to encourage families to choose vegetables with slight blemishes more often in an effort to reduce waste.
During the festive period, sales of carrots increase by 130 per cent during the week before Christmas compared to the previous weeks.
This shows that the tradition of leaving food and drink for Santa Claus, which comes from Norse mythology, is still as popular as ever.
Morrisons is spreading Christmas cheer by giving away carrots to thousands of shoppers this weekend.
Andy Todd, senior carrot buyer at Morrisons, said: “Christmas is a magical time of year and we want to help our customers celebrate it in any way we can.”
“Our delicious Wonky carrots are very popular because they help our British farmers reduce waste and are a cheaper alternative for customers.”
Andy added: ‘We just hope the reindeer enjoy them as much as our customers do!’
To help spread the festive cheer, Morrisons will also be offering free Mince Pies and Christmas Cake to all customers visiting its cafes on December 19, giving them an extra treat to enjoy with their hot and cold drink.
It comes as Aldi urges shoppers to keep their receipts if they want a chance to get back the money they spent.
Customers at the popular supermarket could win £100 at the festive high street store as part of its Big Advent Giveaway, which will see the brand offer to pay lucky customers for their purchases.

The supermarket revealed they would select one customer every day until Christmas Eve to recoup the cost of their festive party.
All shoppers need to do is keep their receipt any day they visit the store.
They must then send a copy of their receipt to Aldi (aldicompetitions@citypress.co.uk) for a chance of having it returned to them.
The supermarket will then randomly choose one lucky winner each day to get the cost of their store back.
Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi, said: “Our big Advent giveaway is our way of saying thank you to our loyal customers by helping us make the festive season even more special.”
“At Aldi, we are committed to offering the best value and quality, ensuring everyone can enjoy a magical Christmas without breaking the bank.”
