A plus-size travel influencer who wants free seats for fat travelers now says Uber and Lyft drivers should be forced to carry seat belt extenders for "size passengers"

The plus-size travel influencer who has become famous for saying that airlines should provide free extra seats for obese travelers has expanded her fat pride activism to Uber and Lyft.

Jaelynn Chaney, known as Jae Bae, posted a video to Tik Tok Monday arguing that rideshare companies should force their drivers to make seat belt extenders available for plus-size passengers.

‘Every time I use a rideshare, I am forced to go without a seatbelt because there are no seatbelt extenders available. This is a common problem for many plus size people,” he wrote in the video’s caption.

He continued: ‘This is not only inconvenient: it is unsafe. It should be mandatory for rideshares to provide at least one seat belt extender per vehicle.’

As the subtitles roll on the video, Chaney is seen climbing into the passenger seat of a sedan as if to illustrate his point.

Every time I use a rideshare, I am forced to go without a seat belt because there are no seat belt extenders available. This is a common problem for many plus size people. This is not only inconvenient: it is unsafe. It should be mandatory for rideshares to provide at least one seat belt extender per vehicle. Companies should reimburse drivers for the cost, which averages about $20. Although I always carry a “universal” seat belt extender with me, they often don’t work. If every driver carried at least one seat belt extender specifically tailored to their vehicle, this problem could be eliminated. Safety for all sizes SHOULD NOT be optional. Perhaps anticipating some of the criticism he might receive, Chaney wrote that he always carries a universal seat belt extender on trips, but that they often don’t work even though they are advertised as “universal.”

He added that companies like Uber and Lyft should reimburse drivers for the cost of seat belt extenders, which cost as little as $12 on Amazon.

«If every driver carried at least one seat belt extender specifically adapted to their vehicle, this problem could be eliminated. Safety for all sizes SHOULD NOT be optional,” he concluded.

The vast majority of commenters did not seem sympathetic and chose to tell him that the problem was his and not the rideshare companies’.

“Not trying to be rude, but if you need an extender to use a seat belt in a car, that should be a sign to strap yourself in and lose some weight,” one viewer wrote.
