This is the gruesome moment when a hungry pack of wolves ate a dog after its owner accidentally dropped it in their enclosure at a Chinese zoo.

Video footage shows predators tearing up the dog as they throng in a circle, before a wolf runs off with it between its teeth in the Wild Wolf Valley, near Changi town in northern Xinjiang on Monday.

The person who filmed the video said the owner was holding the small dog and watching the wolves from an observation deck as it slipped and fell in front of the wolves.

The images show seven wolves attacking the dog while onlookers scream in shock.

The wolves chew the poor dog and refuse to give it up.

After a struggle, two of the three remaining wolves apparently give up the fight and have a pack member run away with the dead dog between his teeth.

The triumphant wolf runs off into the distance with the animal in its mouth while the rest of the pack follows him.

Local media outlets said the dog was killed in the attack but did not disclose whether the body was recovered or eaten before it could be disposed of.

While it is rare for some pets to drop into zoo enclosures, this has happened in the past.

A dog narrowly escaped in 2017 after slipping through its owner’s arms and falling into a tiger den at a zoo in Jiangsu province, eastern China.

Two tigers were seen staring at the dog after it fell from a first-floor viewing platform into a moat separating the animals and tourists.

The happy little dog was rescued by zookeepers with a net after shooting fireworks at the two Siberian tigers.
