A new variety of “giant” avocados weighing four times as much as the supermarket fruit has taken Australia by storm – and their rate of oxidation means they can be eaten for days once opened.

Jala avocados weigh on average between 1 and 1.2 kilograms and experts praise the fruit’s “beautiful creamy, buttery and nutty flavor.”

Jess Fleming, Manager of Flemings Nursery In Queensland, he told FEMAIL that Jala avocados are sure to be a favourite with food lovers.

“Jala has a slow oxidation rate and avocados stay fresh for up to five days after being cut; they are not a ‘cut and eat’ fruit like many others,” he said.

The two main varieties of Australian avocados are Shepard (in season from February to April) and Hass (in season from May to January).

Currently, avocados are only available in Queensland, but will be rolled out across Australia by early 2025.

The fourth-generation nurseryman added: ‘Jala trees produce avocados with large fruit and large seeds, but the seed-to-flesh ratio is much more fleshy than standard Hass.

‘The fruit has green skin and, although it may have some spots on the outside, this does not affect the pulp.’

Ms Fleming revealed that while many have speculated that Jala avocados will be “tasteless and watery” due to their size, the opposite is true.

The trees will be available at garden centres across the state, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Far North Queensland, with the fruit expected to make its interstate debut early next year.

Fleming Nursery sold its first release of 1,800 trees to Bunnings Warehouse and local nurseries in Queensland.

Ms Fleming said 5,000 more trees would be available by March 2025.

Jala avocados are also “perfect” for green-fingered home gardeners.

“If you have a yard with a lot of space, it’s a good, easy tree for you,” Fleming said.

‘You just have to make sure the tree has adequate drainage.’

Jala trees typically grow to 7 meters tall, but can grow up to 10 meters if conditions are favorable.

The trees should bear fruit in two to three years.
