A mother and her two young children have tragically died after a suspected gas explosion at their home in Naples on Sunday.

The house collapsed on Sunday morning in the town of Saviano, killing a boy and a girl who lived there with their family, as well as a woman who has not yet been officially identified, who local media said was their mother.

Rescuers recovered the father and a baby alive, “and unfortunately the lifeless bodies of the other two children,” firefighters wrote Sunday morning.

Local media reported that the girl and boy were four and six years old.

After hours of searching through the rubble by hand and with the help of sniffer dogs, firefighters located a third victim, an unidentified woman, fire service spokesman Luca Cari told RaiNews 24.

More than 60 civil protection volunteers joined the rescue efforts, the Campania region wrote on Facebook.

The father and baby rescued from the rubble were recovering in hospital, while the father was in serious condition, media reported.

Images provided by firefighters showed two large holes in the roof of the building, which was partially collapsed.

The cause of the collapse may have been a gas explosion, according to press reports.

Mayor Vincenzo Simonelli was at the scene and told reporters the building looked “ruined in on itself” and added that it was “a very serious situation.”

Media reports said a gas leak may have caused the explosion that rocked the second floor of the building, which collapsed, covering the lower floor with debris.
