A missing British hiker has been found dead in the Spanish Pyrenees four days after he vanished during a mountain walk.

Police and other emergency services had been searching for the 70-year-old Londoner, whose name has not been revealed, since he went missing on Monday.

Mountain search and rescue experts from the Greim unit of the Civil Guard participated in the case, the same type of police specialists searching for the missing Jay Slater in Tenerife.

Today it was learned that the victim had been found dead near Pico de Aspe, a mountain in the western Pyrenees of Huesca on the western side of the Aragon Valley.

The 8,678-foot peak rises above the Spanish ski resort of Candanchú and the Somport Pass on the border with France.

The grim discovery was made yesterday around 1pm, although the information was not made public until today.

The three Greim officers who found the body of the anonymous hiker notified a police helicopter that was in the area so they could transport him to a nearby mountain shelter and hand him over to funeral home workers.

It is believed that the deceased was walking between the Lizara and Candanchu mountain refuges.

The Huesca Civil Guard are said to have received a message from the UK’s Interpol office in Manchester giving them the coordinates of an SOS bracelet worn by the hiker.

The images released by the Civil Guard showed the operation to rescue the body of the tragic Briton.

French police mountain rescue experts are also believed to have been involved in the operation to find the hiker after the alarm was raised.

In November 2020, British hiker Esther Dingled disappeared on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees.

Her remains were found in July 2021 near the place where she disappeared.

Esther, 37, set out from the town of Benasque, about 280 kilometers east of the place where the British pensioner’s body was found.

It was not immediately clear today what had led to the latest tragedy.
