A man was shot to death by police after he allegedly lunged at officers with a knife.
Police were called to a house on Love Street in Mareeba, in far north Queensland, at around 11:30am on Saturday.
They had received reports that a man had threatened to harm himself.
Police said the negotiators spoke to the man who allegedly had a woman with him and he refused to let her go.
The man allegedly advanced towards the specialist officers while armed with a knife.
Police were called to a house on Love Street in Mareeba, in far north Queensland, at around 11:30am on Saturday.
The police then shot the man.
First aid and CPR were immediately provided, but the man died at the scene.
There were tense scenes on the street as angry crowds gathered to question police about the shooting.
A crime scene was declared as police investigated the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated by the Ethics Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner.
The investigation will be subject to the supervision of the Crime and Corruption Commission.
