A man from Missouri is reunited with a long-lost brother or sister that he never knew after the death of his mother and a grizzly discovery in her freezer.
Adam Smith, 37, from St. Louis, met brother or sister Laura Sorensen for the first time at his mother Barbara's funeral and since the couple is getting closer.
Her existence was a complete mystery to him because he could not remember the pregnancy or birth that would have happened when he was about five years old.
Laura discovered her biological family through 23 and Me, but by the time she found out Barbara had been dead for a few weeks, Ryan W. Krull reported The Riverfront Times.
She only looked up her mother's death announcement online to discover a shocking development – that in a large box that had been hidden at the back of her freezer for about 47 years, it was the body of the dead baby girl.
Her half-brother Adam opened the cardboard container after passing Barbara, who had traveled with them to at least four houses where it always occupied at least a quarter of the freezer. The content was previously unknown.
Weeks after discovering the body of a dead girl in the freezer of his deceased mother, Adam Smith, 37, (right) discovered that he has a living sister Laura Sorensen (left)
Smith asked for decades what was in the box in the freezer, but Barbara told him it was a wedding cake top or avoided answering
Adam Smith thinks that Barbara (left) has kept her daughter's body frozen for 47 years. The box was tucked away behind a Banquet Salisbury Steak Deep Dish pie and wrapped in white plastic
Adam had previously thought it contained the top of a wedding cake, and when he questioned Barbara about it, he was told: & # 39; No & # 39 ;, it is nothing. No comment. Don't worry, & or she just changed the subject.
Smith told at the discovery in July KSDK: & # 39; It still had skin, hair, and everything it was mummified. & # 39;
He reached further and also felt a foot. & # 39; Then I went crazy, put it in the box and immediately called the police, & # 39; he added.
After being interrogated by a detective, the remains were sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy. Information about the death or the child is still unknown.
Adam, who had moved to his mother to look after her during her fight against lung cancer, was shocked that she had never revealed anything.
He said: & # 39; She knew she wouldn't be around much longer. Why couldn't she tell us? I can't help but think she did something bad. & # 39;
A possible hint about the identity of the child comes from Adam's childhood.
When he was between six and eight years old, he remembered driving home with his mother and asking her why she seemed upset.
& # 39; My firstborn Jennifer would have been 21 today, & # 39; said Barbara. & # 39; I can't help thinking that the baby I found was Jennifer, & # 39; Adam added.
Barbara would have been in her twenties or possibly younger when the baby was born. But she grew up in a strict Catholic family and hid the pregnancy.
The baby may still be born, die of cot death or may have been involved in an accident.
If this were the child found in the freezer, Barbara could have kept her between 46 and 47 years old and wrapped it in a pink blanket, Adam thinks.
Adam Smith found a corpse in a freezer in his late mother's apartment in St. Louis, Missouri
Smith was looking for Barbara & # 39; s things in her house after she died after a cancer fight
About a week before his mother's death, Adam was called by his aunt after their daughter Jessica and his cousin had paid for a 23 and more DNA test kit.
She found two full cousins, both women, one in Illinois with the name Laura and another in Florida with the name Shannon.
They were born apart for ten years, but shared the same mother. Barbara had offered them for adoption, both of them taken in by different families.
Laura grew up in St. Louis before moving to Springfield Illinois eight years ago.
She googled her mother's name and found news articles about the dead baby found in her freezer.
Laura said: & # 39; I actually saw the story about Barbara before I even found the cousin or Adam or one of them.
& # 39; I saw an article earlier that week. I was like: "No way, I read that headline completely earlier that week." Apparently that is my biological mother and my half brother. It was overwhelming. & # 39;
Smith said his mother was a very secret woman and after contacting his father on social media he was told that Barbara was pregnant at one point, but then the baby suddenly disappeared
He was shocked to feel a foot and saw her and skin when he opened the box with this knife
Laura discovered that her biological father was an acquaintance of one of Barbara & # 39; s ex-spouses with whom she dates a year and a half, from a document provided by the adoption agency.
A birth certificate with information about Barbara showed that she had been pregnant seven times. She had a miscarriage, a stillbirth and four natural babies.
The document also mentioned that her half-brother Adam went to a school for children with hearing problems – despite the fact that his hearing was always good.
This leaves the question whether an adoption employee confused details in the document or, like many of the mysteries surrounding Barbara & # 39; s life, whether it was a made-up piece of information.
& # 39; The more you know, the more questions you have, & # 39; Laura said.
When asked, her thoughts about the baby in the freezer could only speculate.
She said, "Maybe something tragic happened and she didn't know what to do, and that was her solution not to get in trouble."
& # 39; She was young when it happened. I don't think it was a criminal thing. It takes a big heart to give up two children for adoption, so I find it hard to believe that there is any form of malice. & # 39;
No further information has been released about the unknown girl who was found two and a half months ago. Adam also has to discover how the baby died.
To confirm whether the little girl was Barbara & # 39; s biological child, both Laura and Adam did 23 and Me DNA tests.
Although the two have come close to each other and have found comfort in finding each other, their search for answers continues.
