A man who violently beat a Korean woman in a Brisbane park told his family he wished he could take her and give her a bouquet of flowers.

Alex Reuben McEwan pleaded not guilty to having murdered Eunji Ban on November 24, 2013, but is guilty of a minor offense of manslaughter for mental health reasons.

During his trial on Friday, the court heard the details of the letters that McEwan wrote to Ms. Ban's family after he beat her so severely that she drowned in her own blood.

Paramedics have told the court they could not immediately determine their sex due to the severity of their head injuries.

In a letter to his family, which was also read in court, McEwan said he was ashamed of what he had done, but believed he was possessed when he attacked Ms. Ban while walking to work.

"I'm not sure if I'll be able to look you in the face again because of what I've done to that innocent lady," he wrote.

"I probably change my last name so that it's no longer a McEwan because the McEwans do not murder."

He said he was sure he was bewitched by a demon at that moment because he could not remember what happened.

"Do not forgive me, do not think about me again," he wrote.

The trial continues.
