A man was arrested at a major airport after hundreds of thousands of dollars were allegedly found in his luggage.

The 34-year-old man was detained at Gold Coast Airport in Queensland before being able to travel to Mildura in Victoria in March 2024.

Australian Federal Police allegedly found $830,000 in the man’s carry-on and checked luggage after they were alerted by a sniffer dog.

Police claimed the money was the proceeds of a crime and arrested the man.

He was charged with trafficking in cash suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

The 34-year-old is due to appear at Southport Magistrates’ Court on Monday and faces a lengthy 10-year prison sentence.

AFP Acting Detective Superintendent Mary Bolton said officers have been working hard to seize the proceeds of organised crime.

“Organized crime groups are driven by greed and try to hide their ill-gotten wealth from the authorities,” he said.

‘Eliminating the proceeds of crime is critical to dismantling organised criminal activity and causing maximum damage to the criminal environment.

“The AFP has guaranteed that this money will not be used to finance other criminal activities.”
