A man accused of kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old girl in north Sydney has been charged seven times by NSW police.

Detectives accused 37-year-old Dural man Brett John Callaghan of additional crimes, including caring for a child under 14 for illegal sexual activity and delivering a prohibited drug to a child under 16 on Thursday.

The girl was reported missing after visiting the Hornsby Westfield shopping mall on April 28 with friends and her parents afterwards.

Detectives said the girl had traveled from the mall to a Thornleigh skate park, where she was seen with a young girl and a man she didn’t know.

The 12-year-old is said to have traveled with his Callaghan to his Dural estate, where police allege she was sexually assaulted before she was found around 1.15am the following day.

The girl was also sexually assaulted by Callaghan while in his car, police said.

NSW detective John Kerlatec claimed last month that the other young girl was used to build confidence in the victim, but the two children did not know each other.

“We’re not sure, but we can suspect this other young girl was with this man … that gave her a sense of comfort, a sense of security in saying that this man might be an older and it’s okay to leave with them, “Det Supt Kerlatec told reporters.

Callaghan – who was charged on April 29 – had his case heard for the second time in Parramatta Local Court on Thursday, after a forensic order from the police.

He remains behind bars and will face 10 charges in the same court on June 25, including two counts of worsened sexual intercourse with a child between 10 and 14 years of age.
