Royal watchers have been thrilled by Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark’s choice to “dress in matching” clothes during their visit to the Baltic Sea island of Ærø.
Many experts have claimed that the royal couple’s brown trousers, beige blazers and matching collared shirts represent their unity and closeness after a year plagued by rumours of marital problems.
But others say it is nothing more than a “clever stunt” – an act of looking closer than ever while the situation remains tense behind closed doors.
Historian and royal expert Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen said that when it comes to the current monarchs, “nothing is accidental,” especially when it comes to their wardrobe choices.
“This shows that they act like a couple and are a couple,” she told Danish news agency BT, adding that it is an act of “bonding.”
Historian and royal expert Lars Hovbakke Sørensen agrees.
“There’s no doubt that it fits very well with their brand, which is very much about appearing as a couple, as a royal couple and not just the King being the one who stands out all the time,” she said.
Australian body language expert Dr Louise Mahler described the pair as “magnificent” for their ability to “pop” together again and again.

The couple spoke to locals during the trip.
“It’s a miracle that they appear again and again, greeting the audience and portraying an eternal love story,” he said.
He also praised them for their “wardrobe” changes.
“Their matching clothes are a work of art created by their entourage and they in turn provide the paint to complete a captivating story,” said Dr Louise.
‘Sometimes, like in these photos, there is no vibration between them, but at the same time there is no disconnection. Their eyes may not meet, but their eyes do not always meet.
“They face the challenge together with professionalism and joy. At least for the moment, it seems that everything remains the same for the Danish royal couple.”
The couple changed outfits several times during their visit to the island. They took photos for Instagram in one of the outfits in which the Queen appeared in the same white shirt, but with a long light brown skirt and a matching hat.
They seemed relaxed and coordinated, although some people thought it was “a farce.”
The couple has had a rough year in the press.
The king was wearing a dark suit and tie.
In one of the photographs the couple appear to be looking into each other’s eyes, but on closer inspection the King is looking directly over his wife’s head.
The images left her fans heartbroken.
“They are completely comfortable together,” one said.
“The first images look like they’re straight out of a 1918s novel,” says another.
But not everyone agreed.
“It would be nicer if he looked at her,” one woman said.
