Radio star Stephen Rowe has claimed Australia is so overgoverned the country is producing a “weaker race” of people and producing “a lazy piece of shit” in a cruel rant that left his co-host stunned on Thursday.
The former Adelaide Crows AFL player launched the jaw-dropping tirade as he and fellow FIVEAA commentator Stacey Lee discussed the installation of cameras that detect when drivers are using mobile phones behind the wheel.
After claiming that the new devices are only being introduced to increase South Australia’s income and not improve security, Rowe exploded at what he saw as a nanny state move while previewing his program on the show. Read.
“We don’t need help to stay safe, we know not to use mobile phones, we know not to drink or drive, we know not to wear seatbelts – we’re just over-governed,” he said.
Stephen Rowe (pictured left with his radio co-presenter Tim Ginever) has unleashed on the state of Australia in a stunning tirade on live radio.
The former Adelaide Crows player left fellow radio commentator Stacey Lee (pictured, right) worried the station was going to get into trouble after he called Australians “lazy pieces of shit”.
Lee then asked if he was concerned about the risk posed by drivers who were distracted by their mobile phones, prompting Rowe to focus on Australia as a whole.
“I don’t know, we’re breeding a weaker race,” he said.
‘We have to be governed, fined, punished and policed simply to be proper humans, simply to live a good life.
“We never had this in the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. I’ll tell you what: back then no one would have crossed the line because you respected your elders, you respected your principal or your schoolteacher.
The 58-year-old then made a strange reference to the country’s most famous bandit as he recalled what he saw as an older, wiser Australia, where criminals got what they deserved: “In the days of the bow and arrow we had the horse and cart… A bit like Ned Kelly, we shot him, we hung him, you know what I mean?
The 58-year-old played for the Adelaide Crows and also attacked his former club with a furious tirade on his radio show.
‘Do you think there would have been less crime in, I don’t know, let’s go back to the World War I era? Do you think we were better people then? Do you think we were more familiar, more hard-working, had better principles and better customs?
When Lee disagreed and said he thinks Australians are hard-working, Rowe responded: “Australians are lazy pieces of shit at the moment.”
Lee, clearly surprised, tried to laugh at the comment before saying: ‘Why are you doing this on the afternoon show? Why don’t you save it for your program? I don’t want to get into trouble.’
Nicknamed ‘Rowey’, the veteran of almost 200 SANFL games for Norwood and 29 games for the Crows is considered Adelaide’s most passionate sports broadcaster on the station’s website.
Rowe made a strange reference to bandit Ned Kelly as he recalled what he sees as an older, wiser Australia.
His son James also played for the Crows, and Rowe was commentating when he scored his first AFL goal in March 2021.
Rowe made headlines in South Australia when he trashed the club for his poor form following their loss to Richmond earlier this month.
He called the team’s board of directors “weak” and called its recruiting “pathetic” and said head coach Matthew Nicks doesn’t deserve to keep his job.
“I know what will happen, they will throw an assistant (coach) under the bridge, they will say the development is not correct and the same key people I have been with for several years will still be in their chairs.” Rowe said.
“And that’s the frustration I think a lot of Crows fans have… I see people who have paid $1000 for their membership and they’ve had a huge fit.”
