It is unknown why the passengers were fighting, but the ferry was forced to return to Dublin only 20 minutes into the journey.

An Irish Ferries spokesman said: ‘Irish Ferries can confirm that there was a public order problem on board the SWIFT DUBLIN at 13:50 yesterday which was sailing from Dublin to Holyhead shortly after departure.

“Irish Ferries attaches the highest importance to safety and therefore decided to return immediately to Dublin Port where the incident was dealt with by the Irish authorities.

The ship resumed navigation at 15:52.

“Irish Ferries apologizes to the passengers whose journey was disrupted by this issue and continues to assist the authorities who are investigating the incident.”

The Garda have been contacted for comment.
