A fashion expert analyzes the most popular designers in each state of the United States

Have you ever wondered which are the most popular designers and brands in each state?

In the South, shoppers love preppy vacation clothing brands like Lilly Pulitzer, while in the Northeast, women often opt for workwear brands like J. Crew.

To discover the most popular designers, FEMAIL received data from Elegant brand and Post payment – and we looked at Google Trends analytics state by state to find out where women are shopping, as well as what they are searching for and buying.

“The state you live in largely determines your exposure to brands and trends in your region,” Chloe Baffert, Poshmark’s director of consumer merchandising and curation, told DailyMail.com.

Chloe explained that “consciously or not,” people “look at those around them to know what brands to wear,” which “becomes even more apparent when visiting a new state.”

‘Each state has iconic brands that represent the style of its residents: Lilly Pulitzer is synonymous with Palm Beach and Southern resort wear style, and is one of the most purchased brands among Poshmark shoppers in Florida and in North and South Carolina,’ Chloe said.

And when it comes to Washington, DC, which is technically in the South though it defies categorization, there is a focus on sustainability.

“In socially and politically focused states like the nation’s capital, we see a direct correlation between sustainability-focused brands being purchased, like Reformation, and brands with a meaningful mission, like Chantecaille, a luxury beauty brand with a strong philanthropic spirit,” Chloe explained.

The Northeast

If you spend time in the Northeast, expect to see people enjoying quiet luxury.

“Quintessential preppy style, before it was branded as cool, laid-back luxury, and the East Coast go hand in hand,” Chloe said.

“J. Crew is one of the most purchased brands by Poshmark shoppers in New York, Maine, Virginia, and Connecticut,” Chloe continued.

But it’s not all preppy: In Connecticut and Rhode Island, boho-chic brand Free People reigns supreme on Poshmark, and in New York and Pennsylvania, shoppers are snapping up secondhand Lululemon items.
