According to an Instagram story posted and spotted by actor Stephane Kapicecek comicbook.com, Filming for Deadpool 3 has begun. Production begins in the midst of the ongoing Authors Guild of America strike, which means work on the film will move forward without its writers.
The writers’ strike is now in its third week, and several series and movies, including Stranger Things, Severance and Daredevil: Born Again, have halted production until the strike ends with a fair deal. Despite this, Marvel Studios is choosing to move ahead with Deadpool 3.
While this is possible when the script has already been written (and Deadpool 3’s production start date was previously set for May, so the script is likely already completed) it means that any writing duties that may come up during production will be affected. Where the author’s job does not stop once the script is finished. It is often necessary to have copywriters available on set to adjust the story and give constructive feedback during production.
According to ColliderBecause of the contract the Deadpool 3 writers have with the studio, the actors have to follow the script to the letter. This means that star Ryan Reynolds, whose constant jokes are a key aspect of his performance in Deadpool, will not be allowed to improvise any lines during production while the strike continues.
Marvel has already halted development on one of its other films: Blade. Pre-production of Mahershala Ali’s film, which had already seen several delays, was put on hold in early May.
There is currently no idea when the strike will end due to ongoing contract disputes between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which negotiates on behalf of most Hollywood production studios. The authors search for a contemporary decade that reflects how live broadcasting has changed the media landscape. Among many things, authors want to be paid, respected, and protected by the studios that use their work to make billions of dollars.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled to hit theaters in November 2024, which puts it in the middle of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike the first two films, Deadpool 3 will be the first film in the franchise under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella, but it will maintain an R rating for adults.
