Infamous family destroyer Alex Murdaugh spends his days in a maximum security prison reading fan mail, writing letters, playing games and watching television.
Recently released selfie images of the convicted murderer have given the public a glimpse into the inmate’s life at the McCormick Correctional Institution in South Carolina, where he is serving two life sentences for the murders of his 22-year-old son Paul and his wife. Maggie, 52.
Murdaugh, 54, is in protective custody at the prison along with 28 other inmates who are considered at risk of violence if placed with the general population, such as ex-police officers and sex offenders.
“When he came in, he obviously had a lot of visibility and was kind of a celebrity, but he gets along with everyone in the pod,” his attorney Jim Griffin told Fox News Digital.
Murdaugh reportedly keeps his distance from most of the other inmates in his unit, who have committed “horrendous sex crimes,” according to Griffin.

However, he does have a ‘small group’ that he interacts with on a regular basis, watching TV or playing card or checkers games.
Griffin said that CourtTV is the preferred channel at the prison.

They are allowed to roam the common area of the pod, including a small patio, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Additionally, each inmate has their own tablet for phone calls, emails, and limited internet access; each email costs them $0.25.
Inmates can make one call on their tablet each day. However, calls to your legal team are allowed on an “as needed” basis.
Tablets may only be used at designated times and must be ‘for authorized purposes only, including access to secure messaging system, phone calls, staff requests, canteen orders, law library, SCDC-provided documents/notices, subscriptions to entertainment (music, movies, games, books, etc.) and educational resources,’ according to the Department of Corrections.
Murdaugh spends part of his time reading fan mail, his lawyer previously told NewsNation in May.
“I have here 901 letters from people in more than 28 states, 99 percent of them are people who saw the trial and believe they were innocent,” Griffin said.
A correspondent, named Nicolette K., wrote to Murdaugh on March 12 saying, “…I think I love you…” and “I think about you all day, every day.”
Murdaugh’s fans have reportedly even sent him money for his commissary, where inmates can purchase soft drinks, snacks and toiletries.
The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) operates a cashless system for inmates, however friends and family may deposit funds into your commissary account.
Murdaugh still has no visitation privileges and also spends his days writing to friends, whom he is still trying to convince of his innocence, and his remaining son, Buster.
The public has gotten some glimpses of their relationship thanks to the published prison calls, but Griffin said Murdaugh doesn’t call much because he knows he’s being recorded.
“He communicates with Buster through letters and I relay messages to Buster, and that has been the extent of the communication.
Despite concerns for his safety, Murdaugh wants to be transferred to the general prison population, according to his lawyer. Inmates in protective custody may not participate in the facility’s programs, which include the production of upholstered furniture and powder-coated metal products.
According to reports, he would rather risk being harmed by other inmates than remain in isolation.
His lawyer Griffin said: ‘He thinks he can be productive in the general population. He’d rather take his chances in the yard than rot in a cell, to be honest.

Griffin, who is appealing his conviction, added that Murdaugh “has no death wish” and is “looking forward to the day he gets out of prison.”

The disgraced attorney was transferred to the state prison’s protective custody unit following a 45-day evaluation at the Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia.
DailyMail.com has contacted Murdaugh’s attorney, as well as the McCormick Correctional Institution for comment on this story.
Murdaugh executed his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at their home in June 2021, shooting them with two different weapons before calling 911 and claiming he discovered the bodies. He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in March after a successful six-week trial.
At the time of the murders, he was facing a hearing that could have revealed what he later admitted was an $8.5 million theft from his South Carolina law firm.
He has always denied any involvement and is in the process of appealing his convictions.
