A British tourist and his son have been found dead on a nature trail in the Brazilian rainforest after being apparently electrocuted by a broken power cable.

The father and son were only found when engineers from the electricity company Elektro went to investigate a power outage at Bonete beach, one of two beaches connected by the coastal path.

His car was later discovered in a nearby parking lot.

In a statement, Elektro, the electric company that supplies power to Ubatuba, expressed its condolences for the incident and said it had sent its own team of investigators to get to the bottom of the incident.

Undersecretary of Tourism Rodrigo Andrade said in a statement: ‘The Department of Tourism expresses its solidarity with the incident and regrets the death of two tourists this weekend on the trail from Fortaleza to Bonete.

“Unfortunately, the incident occurred in an area not regulated for ecotourism, which is an old access used by local residents and is not open to ecotourism activities.”

He added: “We want to reiterate the importance of hiring an authorized agency and qualified tour guides who can carry out this activity with professionalism and competence, guaranteeing the safety of people on the trails.”
