An Australian Tesla owner has shared footage of an elderly man scratching his electric vehicle and is asking the public for help in locating him so he can get him to foot the repair bill.

David Shannon shared the video online after the brazen vandal reportedly damaged his pride and joy at a Woolworths in Queanbeyan, near Canberra on the New South Wales border, on Thursday.

The footage shows the man scratching the vehicle as he walked past before stopping on the pavement to inspect his handiwork.

“Does anyone know this man? He scratched my car at Woolworths,” Shannon wrote on the community’s Facebook page.

Some onlookers quickly assumed it was parked in a disabled spot before Mr Shannon quickly dismissed that theory.

“Just to be clear, I’m not in a handicap park. The handicap parks are on the right, as indicated by the arrow on the sign,” he added.

“This is not going to be a cheap fix and I would love the opportunity to politely ask you what prompted you to do this.”

Mr Shannon told the Daily Mail Australia the man has yet to be identified and will face up to $3,000 in paint repairs.

He had only one possible explanation for why the man scratched his car: that he had a problem with electric vehicles.

Many viewers encouraged Mr Shannon to share the footage with the police.

“These images should be handed over to the police and he should be held accountable and pay for the damage to the car,” one wrote.

Another added: “Take him to the police, they should be able to find this man.”

A third wrote: “I wonder what his problem is. Why is he intentionally damaging cars like this? I hope he is held accountable and charged.”

Daily Mail Australia has contacted New South Wales Police for comment.

This comes after Brisbane couple Raymond and Barbara Edwards were charged with wilful damage and fined after they were caught on camera scratching cars, including a Tesla, at Brookside Shopping Centre last October.

Earlier this year, they admitted to the Daily Mail Australia that they had let frustration get the better of them after a white Tesla and a white BMW “cut them off” and nearly forced them into a power pole 800 metres from the shops.

“I regret our actions, but the problem is that civility has been thrown out the window and stupidity has been thrown out the window,” Edwards said.

Mr. Edwards was ordered to pay $2,443.61 in restitution for damages caused to the Tesla and the BMW, while Ms. Edwards was ordered to pay the remaining $897.25 for repair work on the Tesla.
