She moved to France in 1779 and began a miserable marriage to her cousin Alexandre de Beauharnais during the dusk of the Ancien Régime.
After losing her first husband to the guillotine in the Reign of Terror, Josephine becomes Napoleon’s mistress – and soon the most powerful man in Europe.
During her turbulent 14-year marriage to Napoleon, she saw herself elevated to the titles of both Empress of France and Queen of Italy.
A flamboyant hostess and expert schmouser, Napoleon’s consort was the PR wing of his reign, eliciting his remark: “You win battles but Josephine wins hearts.”
However, their union was so shaken by his infidelities and sterility, that he annulled it in 1810—just two years before he threw himself into the disastrous invasion of Russia that was the beginning of the end of his turbulent reign.
Vanessa Kirby, who rose to worldwide popularity as Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of The Crown, has been cast as Josephine as Ridley.
