A grandmother was killed when a suicidal man who jumped from a highway overpass crashed through her windshield and hit her.

Margarita Novela Galindo was in the passenger seat as her husband Florencio drove them along the 210 Freeway in Sylmar, Los Angeles, on August 9.

Passers-by called police at 7.17pm saying the man was threatening to jump from the Roxford overpass and fell before they could arrive.

The man hit the Galindos’ car so hard that it went through the windshield and hit Margarita while she was sitting in her seat.

The man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and the Los Angeles Fire Department said it was not known if he survived.

According to the LAFD incident report, Margarita’s injuries were initially believed to be non-life-threatening, but were later found to be much more serious.

He was in the ICU in critical condition for about three weeks until he died on Wednesday, his family said.

“She fought bravely for almost three weeks, but on August 28, doctors told us she would not recover,” said her son David Galindo.

‘Tragically, my mother passed away, leaving me, my brother, my sister and her seven grandchildren. My father is now alone without the love of his life.

‘It’s incredibly unfair that her life was taken because someone else didn’t want hers.

‘My mother was a loving and caring person, and our family is heartbroken and struggling to cope with this unimaginable loss.’

Florencio, incredibly, forgave the man who jumped even though his desire to end his life caused his death.

“He doesn’t know what problems he might have had to commit suicide, but he doesn’t have any resentment,” she said. ABC7 in Spanish
