The former Miss Kyrgyzstan saw her fiancé locked up by her uncle, the country’s president, after his “embarrassingly ostentatious” proposal.

Sadyr Japarov was outraged at Aftandil Sabyrbekov after he used a government helicopter as part of an elaborate proposition to the president’s 23-year-old niece, Lazzat Nurgozhoeva.

Mr Japarov immediately issued a statement condemning the proposal, suggesting that Ms Nurgozhoeva might “draw the right conclusions from this”.

However, after two weeks with no apologies from the new husband, the president lost patience and ordered Sabyrbekov’s arrest on drug charges. The Telegraph reported.

This comes as Kyrgyzstan has been devastated by landslides and floods that have killed dozens of people.

As well as ordering the arrest of his would-be family member, Mr Japarov told media that Sabyrbekov did not love the former game show star, adding that he only proposed to her to protect himself from future arrest.

In Kyrgyzstan, a drug conviction often results in years in prison.

The engagement video showed the couple standing on a hilltop, which they reached via an emergency helicopter costing £1,500 an hour, despite the country’s experience of extreme weather conditions this month.

They walked from the helicopter into a fireworks display as they watched the message: “Will you marry me?”

Kyrgyzstan’s president has been working to crack down on wasteful public finances since coming to power in a coup in 2020, and the video quickly went viral in the country.

Ms Nurgozhoeva, who was Miss Kyrgyzstan in 2020, deleted the clip from her social media.

A state of emergency was declared in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh earlier this month after landslides and flooding killed at least four people, adding to more than a dozen who have died in similar weather conditions in recent months.
