A powerful earthquake of magnitude 5.9 was recorded off the coast of Darwin

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude has been recorded off the coast of Darwin.

The earthquake struck in the Banda Sea at a depth of 62 kilometres on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was no tsunami threat to Australia and 246 people submitted sensation reports to Geoscience Australia.

This comes just hours after a 3.0 magnitude tremor struck the Gippsland region of Victoria, 190 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, at 7.54pm on Monday night.

The epicentre was at Sandy Point, near Wilsons Promontory, and was probably felt in Foster, Inverloch, Buffalo and Leongatha.
