A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hits Los Angeles in Malibu

Los Angeles has been rocked by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake.

Residents in Malibu, 4.3 miles north of the quake’s epicenter, said their “pools were still shaking” minutes after the initial incident.

The initial quake began at 7:28 a.m. local time on Thursday, affecting residents in Pomona, Pasadena and Riverside.

Although initial reports suggested the quake’s magnitude was as high as 5.1, the U.S. Geological Survey has since said the preliminary magnitude is actually 4.7.

Reports suggest San Diego residents also felt the impact.

Two minutes later, a 2.8 magnitude earthquake occurred, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“That earthquake was the scariest since Northridge,” said one Malibu resident.

“It’s not a sudden movement, but rather a violent jolt.”

Model and TV star Amber Rose was among the concerned residents, describing the event as “the biggest earthquake I’ve ever experienced in California.”

“I hope everyone is well,” he added.

There were no reports of injuries as of Thursday morning.

Although California records thousands of earthquakes each year, only 15 to 20 reach magnitude 4.0 or greater.

Several hundred reach magnitude 3.0, while most are extremely small.

Southern California residents flocked to X to reveal that the tremors woke them up.

One wrote: “That earthquake had to happen before my alarm went off? Now I can’t go back to sleep.”

Another said: ‘I’m known for being able to sleep through a million alarms and silence them without being conscious, but… I’m not used to California because every time there’s an earthquake I wake up angry and wondering why the hell something is shaking me.’

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged the quake Thursday morning and said officials are conducting a “routine assessment of the city to assess the damage.”

She said: ‘A preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Malibu shook the Los Angeles area this morning. City teams will continue to monitor.

Earlier this week, Californians experienced five earthquakes in a 48-hour period, raising concerns among residents.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was felt in northern Lake County on Saturday, and two more struck the area the following night, classified as magnitude 2.7 and 2.8.

Southern California residents also reported two more earthquakes on Saturday, the largest measuring 3.9 magnitude.
