The unidentified 27-year-old Tunisian waited 36 hours before seeking medical attention. Doctors at Ibn El Jazzar Hospital in Kairouan said he had an “eggplant deformity”, a telltale sign of penile fracture.
Although the penis is not a bone, it can fracture when the appendage is subjected to blunt and cutting force.
In many cases, a crackling or clicking sound is heard.
Afterwards, the penis usually looks like an “eggplant”, turning purple and swollen.
These injuries typically occur during vigorous sexual intercourse, and positions such as “doggy” and “cowgirl” are known to pose the greatest risk.
Doctors who treated him claimed the horrific injury was “followed by immediate detumescence”, meaning he went limp.
The scans showed two fractures that were 3 cm apart and measured 10 mm and 7 mm, respectively. Both were repaired with sutures.
He suffered no lasting damage and the swelling reduced after two days.
He was also reportedly able to urinate normally again just four days after the procedure.
A penile fracture occurs instantly and requires urgent medical treatment.
For a man to have an erection, two spongy tubes called corpora cavernosa fill with blood and harden. These are surrounded by a fibrous covering, known as the tunica albuginea.
A fracture occurs when these areas break.
Writing in the Case reports from international journal of surgeryDoctors said men suffering “two distinct fractures” are a “rarity in the current literature.”
They added: “Single fractures are reported more frequently.”
