A young mother claims giving birth left her with a gaping hole in her lips, like a “stretched earlobe”, but an NHS “designer vagina” operation means her boyfriend can look on for the first time.

Aimee Mountjoy underwent labiaplasty on the NHS to repair damage to her right lip caused by giving birth to her four-year-old son in a bad position on the toilet in September 2019.

The 21-year-old nursery teacher was left with a “hole the size of an adult’s fist” in her right lip where her baby’s head had “torn through”.

After being “separated” by doctors for four years, the nursery teacher was so “committed” to the appearance of her intimate area that she wouldn’t let her boyfriend, Owen Mitchell, 24, look at her private parts for the two years they were together.

The young mother credits the operation with giving her the confidence to let her boyfriend see him properly for the first time.

In a TikTok video, Aimee responded to dozens of comments from other women who shared similarly traumatic experiences.

She explained that it took three referrals to finally get the green light for surgery.

Aimee told commenters that her initial referral: “was taken down during Covid and then it was a nightmare to get a referral again.”

However, although she eventually let her partner have a look after surgery, Aimee is still unhappy after doctors ‘refused’ to operate on her left side, leaving her lips looking ‘ruined again’.

Taking to TikTok, the mother-of-one shared a clip of herself in hospital immediately after surgery with the caption “it only took four years” and “on cloud 9 because I got a designer vagina on the NHS”.

The pictures show Aimee wearing a hospital gown as she smiles at the camera after finally undergoing the surgery she had been waiting four years for.

Labiaplasty involves surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora, which are the flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal opening.

Aimee said: ‘Because I had it on the toilet (most people rip their bum that way), I ripped it in the opposite direction. Your sensitive parts. Because of the way I was sitting, I wasn’t in the right position to give birth.

WHAT IS LABIAPLASTY?

Labiaplasty is a surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora, the flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal opening.

According to data from the National Health Service, between 2015 and 2016, more than 200 girls under the age of 18 underwent labiaplasty, of which more than 150 were under the age of 15. About 12,000 operations are performed in the United States each year.

The procedure involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is then cut away and the loose edge can be sutured.

Pain, bruising and swelling are likely to occur for up to two weeks.

Some women consider surgery because they do not like the appearance of their vagina or find it uncomfortable.

It is natural and normal for a woman to have visible folds of skin around the vaginal opening and in most cases this should not cause any problems.

In the UK, a labiaplasty costs around £1,000 to £3,000, plus the cost of any consultation or follow-up care which may not be included in the price.

The procedure can be carried out on the NHS if the labia are very abnormal or causing discomfort to the woman.

Labiaplasty should not be performed on girls under 18 years of age as their lips can continue to grow and develop well beyond puberty.

“Apparently, I had a hole the size of an adult fist on the inside of my vaginal lips that had torn. My baby had come out through the side of my flap. I was stitched up, but it basically never healed.

‘The doctors said they couldn’t sew it back together because of the type of tissue it is. That’s why I had to have surgery.

“If they had known sooner, it might have just been a few stitches, but they kept me apart for years. They told me many times it would heal on its own, but obviously it never did.”

The 21-year-old admitted she felt “self-conscious” about the appearance of her lips and never let Owen, who became her boyfriend in 2022, look at them.

The mother of one even admitted that she could barely bring herself to inspect herself.

Aimee said: ‘It looked like you had a lobe piercing and they put a tensioner in it to stretch it out. I’ve looked at it myself, but not too much because I don’t want to.

‘I felt self-conscious because I was so young. I didn’t let anyone see me. I didn’t feel good.

‘I was still dating someone and I thought I couldn’t do it because I thought something wasn’t right. I was more nervous in those situations.

“My boyfriend has never noticed physically, but I don’t let him see it. He’s been amazing and knows how to deal with it.

“I had to do things a little differently than ordinary people. If it’s my boyfriend, it’s fine, but if it’s someone else who’s not as understanding, I wouldn’t be. In that sense, I’ve been very lucky.”

Aimee admitted her painful lips meant she couldn’t wear jeans for three years and was forced to wear seamless leggings and clothes “two sizes too big” – it even “ruined” her job as a gymnastics coach.

She said: ‘For about three years, jeans weren’t an option because the pain was too intense. I had to wear leggings or very baggy jeans.

‘I wear cheap leggings that don’t have seams down the middle. I look like a crazy person when I go shopping for clothes because I’m staring at the seams to see if I can fit into them. I should be able to wear normal clothes now and not two sizes too big.’

‘I used to do gymnastics quite a lot and I couldn’t do it after having a baby. It was a shame because it was a hobby since I was a child.

“I had a hard time training him because he couldn’t get up and down like the others. That ruined my work too.”

Despite eventually undergoing surgery, she admitted she “wishes” she had opted for private surgery, which can cost around £4,000, after doctors refused to operate on both sides of her lips, leaving her looking “ruined”.

Aimee said: ‘They refused to do the left side to match. They only did the right side. I wish I had gone to a private centre because at least they would have aligned it and it would have looked good, not like they’d messed me up again.

“Before I had the surgery I said that if both parts couldn’t be done, I didn’t really want to have the surgery. It changed at the last minute, so I didn’t have much choice.

“I think that goes a long way towards explaining the gynaecological side of the NHS, because it’s not very good. If you have any problems with gynaecology, you’re just pushed aside and not listened to.

“It’s crazy. I knew how long it would take me to get something out of this.”

‘I think when it heals, it will still look like a mess. I don’t want to look, I won’t look. I’m not ready yet. There’s still a hole. I don’t want anyone to look at it because it doesn’t look right.

“From the angle I’m looking at it, I know it doesn’t look good. It takes about two months to get back to normal. Time will tell. Owen has been helping me get back on my feet now.”

The nursery teacher revealed she never knew labiaplasty was available on the NHS and hopes to raise awareness to help other women through her TikTok video.

Aimee said: ‘It’s good that the NHS is actually offering it because I didn’t think they would. They definitely do it in specific circumstances and you have to work to get it. I’ve had loads of messages from people saying they didn’t think it was possible.

“It was their fault from the beginning. Next time, I will definitely give birth at home.”
