A 20-year-old woman has accused Planned Parenthood of rushing her into changing her gender when she was just 18, leaving her with lifelong side effects.
Cristina Hineman filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of abortions, contraception, reproductive care and sex education.
In recent years, the medical institution has also become a leading provider of gender transition hormones for young adults, offering the service at more than 400 locations. At least 40,000 patients turned to Planned Parenthood for hormone treatment this year alone.
Hineman claims he was given a testosterone prescription after a 30-minute consultation with a nurse practitioner after being “brainwashed” by YouTubers, according to a report The Free Press.
He says the testosterone has left him with permanent scars, such as hair on the back of his hands and face. His clitoris has also become permanently enlarged and he feels constantly “uncomfortable.”

Meanwhile, he says his sexual response has been blunted and the top surgery left his chest scarred and “alternately numb and raw.”
Hineman says she went to a PP clinic in Hudson, New York, in November 2021 as soon as she turned 18, as she was desperate to get testosterone after facing skepticism from her parents about her gender dysphoria.
The then-teenager was reportedly ordered to fill out a consent form for “masculinizing hormone therapy.”
According to medical records, a nurse practitioner noted that Hineman had “consulted with a mental health professional.” The nurse and Hineman then discussed “expected changes,” such as beard and body hair growth and a deepening of the voice.
The two also reportedly discussed that “changes in fertility may be permanent or reversible.”
Just a year into her treatment, after undergoing top surgery to remove her breasts, Hineman regretted her decision and no longer believed her gender was the root of her problems.

After the brief discussion, the nurse drew Hineman’s blood and gave him a prescription for testosterone gel.
Hineman says he had suffered from a number of mental health issues before the consultation, including self-harm, depression and anxiety. He also has autism.
Hineman told TFP that the Covid-19 pandemic and isolation exacerbated her problems and the YouTubers she followed at the time “convinced her that gender was the problem.”

She told TFP: ‘I was brainwashed… A lot of people say adults should be able to do whatever they want.

Hineman now considers herself a detransitioner, the term for those who have come to regret their gender transition and return to their birth sex.
“But if you have a mental illness that clouds your vision, or you are so misinformed about what gender dysphoria means, then you cannot consent to such invasive treatments.”

The woman is seeking unspecified damages. Her lawsuit against Planned Parenthood, filed in April, is the first against the health care provider.
Hineman joins more than a dozen young people who have filed lawsuits alleging medical malpractice against institutions such as Kaiser Permanente and individual doctors.
