A young British mountaineer has died after falling on a Spanish mountain.
The 20-year-old man, who has not been named, fell and injured himself on Wednesday while exploring an area known as Puente del Mono, near the town of El Chorro.
He was knocked unconscious and went into cardiac arrest when the first emergency services arrived by helicopter in the mountains near Malaga.
Police attempted to rescue the man by removing him from the rock surface, but he was later pronounced dead.
The alarm was raised at around 11am yesterday and it is understood the climber was crossing a protected climbing route called a via ferrata where a metal rail is bolted to the mountain which users can latch onto and use as a safety line.
The area where the tragedy occurred is located on the famous Caminito del Rey road.
A spokesperson for the Malaga Civil Guard, making his first comment on the tragedy overnight, said: “Members of the Civil Guard’s Greim specialist mountain rescue team based in Alora, near Malaga, supported by a helicopter The Civil Guard based in Granada, have rescued the body of a young British man.

“Despite performing CPR and quickly evacuating him from the scene by helicopter to a nearby heliport where medical services were waiting for him, they could only confirm his death.”
It was not immediately clear this morning whether the climber was on vacation or lives in Spain.
An autopsy will now be carried out and police will appear before an investigating magistrate who has been tasked with an ongoing judicial inquiry into the incident.
It comes after a daredevil British influencer died after falling from the highest bridge in Spain.
The 26-year-old digital creator is said to have jumped from the 200-meter-high Castilla-La Mancha Bridge in Talavera de la Reina, a 90-minute drive southwest of Madrid, over the Tagus River while climbing it to film a trick on social networks. in mid-October.
