Authorities in Tennessee are investigating the tragic death of 13-year-old Savannah Copeland, a high school cheerleader who was fatally stabbed by a 15-year-old boy. The suspect, identified as Malakiah Harris, has been charged with second-degree murder, according to Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler.
Savannah’s body was discovered on a trail in Knox County on Tuesday, November 12, after she was reported missing overnight. Investigators say Harris used a pocket knife to stab Savannah multiple times, resulting in fatal injuries.
His father, Michael Copeland, told local press. Fox 19 News who felt something was wrong after not hearing from Savannah for several hours. Using the Life360 app, Michael was able to help authorities locate her, leading them to the dirt trail where her body was found.
“There’s not much genuine joy or happiness right now,” Michael said in the interview. Reflecting on the senseless violence, he added: “I think it was a lack of compassion, a lack of empathy, that ended my daughter’s life. I’m not going to let that kind of anger come over me. He will be full of compassion; It is the only way I know to defeat evil.”
In Savannah’s memory, a makeshift memorial was set up at the spot where her body was discovered. Her cheer team at Powell Middle School has announced plans to create an annual award in her honor, which will be given to the teammate who best embodies Savannah’s energetic personality.
“Courage, enthusiasm and a go-getter attitude,” Michael said when describing his daughter’s character. He expressed gratitude that his memory will continue to inspire others.

Authorities have not yet released information about a possible motive or clarified whether Savannah knew the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing and Harris is scheduled to appear in court again on January 15.
