A 13-year-old girl has been arrested for allegedly stealing her mother’s SUV and mowing and killing two homeless men in Escondido, California after police tried to persuade her.
The girl was arrested Thursday, but the incident took place in the North County area of San Diego County late in the night of Feb. 12, when a white Ford Explorer was stopped at around 11:20 p.m. for a possible traffic violation near the intersection of Mission Ave. and Gamble. St.
As the officer approached the car, the girl behind the wheel, who had her boyfriend in the passenger seat, stepped on the accelerator in an attempt to avoid the officer.
When she tried to make a left turn during her escape two blocks later, she lost control and jumped up the curb and hit a planter outside the San Diego Gas & Electric transhipment facility.

The two victims, Mateo Salvador, 33, and Sofio Sotelo Torres, 51, slept next to a wall behind the planter.
One died at the crash site, while another died in the hospital, according to the Los Angeles Times
Sotelo Torres, better known as ‘El Gallo’, once ran a tree trimming business but was forced to shut it down. His wife and son eventually moved to Texas, leaving Sotelo Torres behind.
The Mexican consulate is working to return his remains to Mexico.

The 13-year-old suspect tried to flee the crash site on foot, but was quickly arrested.
After the crash, both girls were released to their families pending the results of the investigation.

The girl, who was booked into the youth ward, has not been identified by the police because she is a minor.
The girl is from Vista, California, about 13 miles northwest of Escondido. She took her mother’s car without her knowledge for the deadly joyride.
She was charged with manslaughter by car, dodging police and felony.
Her passenger is not currently being charged and was not named in the police statement.
