The family of a man who was found dead in the back of his car has broken their silence as it was revealed police are treating the death as non-suspicious.
Police were called to a beach south of Mackay Harbour, in northern Queensland, after the body was found inside a LandCruiser near East Point Drive at 1.15pm on Saturday.
The area was cordoned off while detectives declared a crime scene, and initial reports indicated that the body had been found wrapped in a plastic bag.
However, Daily Mail Australia understands the report was incorrect and police are treating the man’s death as a suicide.
Just days before the tragedy, the man’s LandCruiser had been stolen before it was finally located and returned.
Devastated loved ones have revealed the robbery was the “last last straw” for the man as he struggled with his mental health.
Police were called to Mackay Harbor after a man’s body was discovered in an abandoned LandCruiser (pictured) on Saturday afternoon.
Officers on scene as the area was cordoned off as part of the investigation.
“Having his car stolen was the last straw,” the family said, through a statement released by a friend on Facebook.
“To the criminals who stole your car, yes you know who you are, you have finally pushed (sic) someone to the edge.”
Days before the death, the man asked for help finding his vehicle after it was stolen in East Point.
“Can everyone keep an eye out for a stolen old 2000 model while transporting Landcruiser troops?” the post read.
‘Last night it went out with the servo and got stuck at Mount Pleasant, but they got it out again. Thank you.’
The tragic discovery of the man’s body was made after members of the public walked past the abandoned car and contacted police when they recognized it as the missing vehicle from the online post.
Witnesses approached and discovered the LandCruiser’s windows boarded up with cardboard.
The man opened the unfastened back door and made the shocking discovery before calling triple-0.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
