US banks continue to close costly branches this year and have notified their regulator a total of 36 closures in a single week.
Leading the pack was US Bank, which between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 told its regulator it would close 23 branches nationwide, seven of them in Oregon.
It was followed by Wells Fargo, which informed the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) that it would close five. Two were in California, but the rest were scattered throughout the United States.
Capital One closed three branches in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Other banks that filed requests to close locations that week include Bank of America, Fifth Third, First American Trust in Florida, First National Bank in Texas and Chase.

The number of bank branches in the United States has dropped nearly 20 percent over the past decade, from about 85,000 in 2014 to fewer than 70,000 today, according to FDIC and OCC data.
While the pandemic accelerated the rollout of online banking services, closures have continued since then.
In 2023, a DailyMail.com analysis of OCC data revealed that more than 1,500 branches closed.
While the trend affects nearly all major U.S. banks, one exception is Chase.
Last week, the bank said it would open 500 branches by 2027, investing billions in cities including Boston, Charlotte, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and the D.C. area.
Its planned expansion sets it apart from other banks such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America and US Bank.
Last year, Chase was the only major bank to open more branches than it closed.
Wells Fargo said it would close five U.S. branches.
It opened 195 branches between Jan. 1 and Dec. 22, nearly six times more than Bank of America, which came in second with just 32 branches open.
The OCC must be notified any time a bank wants to close or open a branch.
In a statement to DailyMail.com, the OCC said it “understands the importance of bank branches and is committed to supporting access to banking services in all communities.”
The watchdog also noted that although banks and credit unions must notify the “chief regulator” of closures, the statute requiring them to do so does not allow them to oppose or stop the closure.
